Useful Information About Electrical Kits for Tow Bars
Electrical kits can seem like a complex topic at first glance. To help you understand the essential aspects of the electrical connection between your car and the trailer, we provide you with key information in the following section.
First, a distinction is made between a 7-pin and 13-pin system. The 13-pin system is now integrated into almost every car with a tow bar. Similarly, modern trailers are equipped with this specialized system. If you own an older car, it might not have a 13-pin connection. No worries, you can still tow a trailer. Older models are often equipped with 7-pin electrical kits, which also allow you to tow a trailer without any issues.
It is important, however, to pay attention to compatibility. A trailer with a 13-pin system cannot easily be towed by a car with a 7-pin system. But don't worry—we also offer adapters to solve this issue. Keep in mind, though, that an adapter does not expand the functionality but merely allows for the adjustment.
The Legal Regulations
The traffic regulations require at least seven pins to cover functions like indicators and brake lights. Generally, a 7-pin system is sufficient for basic lighting functions. The 13-pin system simply offers additional features, such as extra lighting inside the trailer.
Tip
How much load you can transport in your trailer depends on three factors:
- the towing capacity of your car,
- the maximum allowable total weight of the trailer, and
- the weight of the empty trailer (without load).
None of these values may be exceeded. If the towing capacity of the trailer is higher than that of your vehicle, the rule is: Always adhere to the smallest value and never exceed the maximum permissible towing capacity of any component of the towing setup! And, of course, check whether you have the appropriate driver's license – because what good is a perfectly matched setup if you're not allowed to drive it?
7 or 13 Pins?
To be honest, a 13-pin electrical kit simply offers more advantages. While 7 pins cover basic functions like indicators and brake lights, that’s about it. However, it’s hard to predict whether you’ll need additional pins for lighting or other purposes in the future. In such cases, you’ll be grateful for 13 functional pins.
This is why we almost exclusively offer 13-pin electrical kits in our shop. They provide significantly more benefits and are an investment in the future. If you already have a 13-pin system, you won’t need an adapter, which also saves costs.
Did You Know?
In Germany, both cars and trailers must have a minimum nose weight of 25 kg. This requirement must be met by car manufacturers as well as trailer manufacturers. However, it is your responsibility to adhere to the prescribed values—otherwise, you’ll be in violation of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO, § 44, Paragraph 3).
There’s More to Know About Electrical Kits
If your modern car has technical extras like parking assistance, it will be deactivated when using the electrical kit. Additionally, you should check if your tow bar supports ESP. You can find this and more information in the detailed product descriptions on our website. There, you’ll also find details about which special models are compatible with tow bars equipped with electrical kits.
In our online shop, we offer complete sets at fair prices. These sets not only include the tow bars themselves but also accessories like electrical kits. We prioritize modern and reliable technology, which is why we predominantly offer 13-pin systems.
